It’s Not So Funny Being A Bunny!

Why Britain’s Popular Pets Desperately Need Homes

Photo of two rabbits in a gardenRabbits are Britain’s third most popular pets and, yet sadly, many of them end up in animal rescue centres. One of the reasons is that parents will a often buy a rabbit for young children – as an alternative to a dog or cat - but when the children get older, and lose interest in looking after their pet, then the rabbit becomes unwanted.

Animal Protection Trust is hoping that this month’s Appeal will encourage pet lovers to consider giving a home to a rabbit from a rescue centre. Rabbits can make wonderful pets: they are quiet, clean, inquisitive, entertaining and responsive.
Like all pets they require proper health care and attention: a warm and safe environment in which to live, with access to a grass run, a good diet, companionship and veterinary care, when needed. An average life span of a rabbit is 6 – 10 years, so a decision to have a rabbit as a family pet should be viewed as a long-term commitment.

Jacqueline Ward-Reel, chairman of Animal Protection Trust said:
"Rabbits can give many years of rewarding pet ownership, if cared for properly. As social animals, they thrive in the company of others, so we would strongly recommend having at least two living together. Currently, all local animal rescue organisations are inundated with unwanted pet rabbits and we desperately need to find new homes for as many as possible."
